The sun rises out of the ocean today in Kodiak at 9:52 am and sets at 4:23 pm, so on this shortest day of the year, our friends and family in Kodiak get about 6 and a half hours of sun fully above the horizon, albeit at a low angle. At 58 degrees north, our island is situated far enough south that the winter months always have light, even if it's mostly muted through rain and cloud cover. On this day, we concentrate on stoking the light in our hearts and homes and welcoming the rest of this most raw and cozy time of year. Happy Solstice, all!
