Adelia's Hiring!

Every salmon season comes with an inordinate amount of planning before we even get our nets anywhere close to the water. Like putting together a big jigsaw puzzle, we do our best to organize everything from gear to food (do I have enough chocolate?) to repairs and upgrades. The most important piece, in our minds, is having good crew in place - not just those who are physically capable of the work - but also those who will meld well, adding positivity to the team environment. We live and work so closely together that this is paramount.

Tollef has his returning crew-mate back and I had been feeling smug about having my crew organized well in advance back in January, but that attitude is never becoming and it has come back to bite me. One of my two women fell through so I’m back to the drawing board, looking for one more person to join me. I thought I’d share with our blog readers the blurb I’m putting forth, in case any of you have people on your radar who might be interested. It’s often a great fit for college students or recent graduates looking to clear their minds for a fresh take on the universe.

I’m looking for one person to join my all-women crew for the summer salmon setnet season on the remote west side of Kodiak Island, Alaska. We fish out of open skiffs using gillnets to harvest all 5 species of salmon while living in little cabins on the beach. No experience necessary - I invite athletic, open-minded people who enjoy working hard in a beautiful wild setting as part of a tight-knit team of 3 to apply. We do this for the lifestyle and love what we do! Dates are early July through early-mid September BUT I am somewhat flexible, for example if someone has to leave to go back to school, so don’t hesitate to contact me if you have a different window of availability. Compensation is 9% of the gross plus free room and board (including delicious greens from our garden and as much salmon as you want to eat!) plus a bonus of 1% for completing close-up at the end of the season. Position is open until filled. Please email me at adelia.myrick1@gmail.com for much more information and/or to apply.
