Solstice Gratitude

Bold, clear notes of two Golden Crowned Sparrows singing permeate the plywood walls of my fishing cabin to bring me to consciousness at 4:30 am on this longest day of the year. A little drizzle falls on my metal roof, and I hear that the wind and waves are calm. I gratefully snuggle under my flannel and down for a bit more sleep before going with my twin sister to check the net for salmon this morning. It’s a sweet and gentle start to the summer here, and I’m greatly looking forward to more to come: More salmon, more family time, more sun and the life it brings with it! Here’s a little photo journal of the start to my season. Stay tuned for notes from Tollef’s side of the bay (an entirely different experience on all levels) on our next blog post!

We had a wonderful group of friends visit, which brought the camp total to 3 dogs, 5 adults, and 6 kids ages 5,6,7,8 and two 12-year olds! All cherish and celebrate this amazing opportunity to live in the wilderness in such concert with the natural rhythms, all while feeding the world! The kids, especially, loved coming out in the skiff to learn what fishing is all about.

My twin sister holds a gift from the sea!

One of my upcoming crew members - my niece - shares a fishy smile with her mom.

I’m grateful beyond words to be able to continue this way of life my parents built and share it with the 3rd generation! Grateful for the salmon who return year after year, grateful for the management plans that protect them, grateful for my family, and grateful for the opportunity to share a glimpse and a taste of this bounty. Happy Solstice to All!
