Uganik Slideshow
Earth Day reminds us to take a moment or two for a deep breath and a moment of appreciation as we look around at this wild and beautiful place we (and our salmon) call home. Customarily on this date we choose to highlight how our salmon are probably more sustainable than any you’ll find. While we’ve previously written about all that makes that statement true, at this very moment in time we pause to note that the computer this blog is composed on is powered by our solar panels; our kelp farm is currently growing faster than bamboo - inches per day! - and sequestering carbon and nitrogen; and our dinner tonight will be very local cod caught by a friend accompanied by garden greens. Living this intensely local, off-grid life while we wait for salmon season to begin is all part of what adds to the lower carbon footprint of our business.
In this part of the world spring has been slow to settle but this week we have had record-breaking rain that finally brings a warm-up and the first tiny bits of green poking from the earth. This morning we see purple crocus finding their way. While this growth is still hard to see unless you’re up close and personal with it, we thought a simple meditative slideshow of some of the colorful lushness of summer would be a perfect Earth Day celebration. In the midst of the busy messy work of preparing for kelp harvest - and salmon soon on its heels - with Tollef up to his eyeballs in a massive welding and engineering project to create a kelp harvesting vessel, watching this slideshow helps us remember to be grateful for our ability to live in, and provide from, this spectacular place. Enjoy!
For those who are eagerly awaiting the opening of our seasonal salmon catch shares, we wanted to let you know that we are doing some website updates and will be offering a couple of new delicious options when the work is done. Stay tuned - we will send out an email when the ordering window is open!
