Bush Rats: what are they and how do these "rats" live? Why, they’re us - it’s a term used in Alaska for those living remote and off the road system. A fellow fisherman's crew member last summer asked why we prefer to live out here, and we find it a question that is difficult to answer succinctly because the terms aren't easily translatable, but here follows one response of ours.

Alaskan Fall To Winter

Southwest wind pours in gusts off the mountains, swirling sheets of white snow over the blue-gray ocean. We’ve been out cutting cedar driftwood logs and splitting them for firewood, but now our second little woodshed is full to the brim and though it’s only 4 pm, the day is starting to mute itself toward darkness. Time to come in, stoke up the woodstove and put a pot of hearty winter soup on to simmer, made with our own venison sausage.

Summer Highlights

Somehow it’s already November and we haven’t written our summer summary yet….just one more symptom of the less than normal times we are living in! All is well here in our little neck of the woods in Uganik Bay – we have nothing to complain about at all and are so lucky to be right where we are – in the middle of wilderness. But since we aren’t traveling South this fall and winter for salmon sales in Minneapolis we have lost our sense of a deadline. However, before we get way too far from summer days, we wanted to share some of the memorable points of this summer.

2020 is Weird All Around

As we wait for our salmon season to kick in in earnest, we’re keenly aware of how different things are this year for so many of us. We wish we could share a bit of this beautiful fresh air and nature-based lifestyle as a balm for all the stresses with everyone. As it is, we are sending our best wishes to all who are touched by recent events and hope for regeneration to come in a positive way from all these struggles….
