Wild Habitat for All

This time of year seems always seems to be a frenzy of last minute projects and shopping in preparation for our long salmon season coming up. Unlike other areas of the state that have short bursts of salmon fishing activity, Kodiak's salmon fishing season runs three and a half months. Now is the time for us to ensure we've got our gear all ready, our provisions all ordered and on their way, and our equipment in tip top shape.

That being said, spring is also a time we savor, a time of quiet before our crews show up and we accelerate to 110 miles per hour. Seeing the animals waking and a feast of green popping up amongst the wonders of our wild and pristine landscape centers us in time and place.

This is where our salmon comes from. What a glorious place to be swimming free. On the far horizon are the snow covered peaks of the Alaska mainland across the volatile Shelikof Straits. We hiked up this mountain last week as a spring tonic for mind and soul.

This bear was interested in a helping of fresh green vegetation at Trap-6, just like us. There are about 3,500 Kodiak bears on the island, and 14,00 people. They are the largest brown bears in the world because they've been isolated from other brown bears for 12,000 years, they have a rich diet of salmon, and most of the island is National Wildlife Refuge, free of development.

Wild chives, wild morel mushrooms, and Forget-Me-Nots (Alaska's state flower) all grow on our mountainsides. It's a treasure hunt to find the morels, but so worth it! We caught some Tanner crab and had morel mushrooms and Tanner crab omelettes. It doesn't get any better than this.
